AAOpt 2026: Evaluating the comfort and usability of Acuvue Vita contact lenses
Kwaku Osei, OD, PhD, FAAO, discussed patient-reported outcomes with a senofilcon C (Johnson & Johnson; Acuvue Vita), reusable lens, with the majority of wearers rating comfort, vision, and handling favorably.
Kwaku Osei, OD, PhD, FAAO, Manager of Global Medical Affairs at Johnson & Johnson Vision, presented a poster alongside colleagues at AAOpt 2026 titled “Patient-reported vision, handling, and comfort with a Senofilcon C reusable lens.” Senofilcon C (Johnson & Johnson Vision; Acuvue Vita) is a reusable contact lens designed for a 30-day wear schedule.
Study design
Investigators recruited 80 subjects, who already wore contact lenses, to wear Acuvue Vita lenses for 4 weeks. Participants then rated their experiences across the comfort, vision, and handling domains using a validated questionnaire. Osei describes these domains as “key drivers for contact lens wear success.”
Results
The study investigators reported that 87.5% of participants agreed that the lenses were very comfortable and 90% reported that they were satisfied by the clarity of their vision throughout the day. Additionally, 93.8% of participants responded favorably to the survey item “It was easy to insert these lenses”.1 Investigators did not perform subgroup analyses.
Why the patient experience matters
Osei emphasized that clinical judgment and lens design can put a patient into a contact lens, but once the patient leaves the office, their experience wearing the lens determines whether they stay in it. "We shouldn't only focus on the clinical findings. We should also take into consideration their unique experiences with the lenses," he said.
Compliance with care and replacement
Osei identified 2 areas of compliance, the first being lens care. Since Acuvue Vita lenses are reusable, patients remove the lenses each day and soak them overnight to disinfect them. Lenses that are not cleaned and disinfected well put patients at risk of infection. The second area is the replacement schedule. The lens is prescribed for 4 weeks of wear and lens performance cannot be guaranteed once patients exceed that period, according to Osei.
Patient selection
Since Acuvue Vita is a non-presbyopic spherical lens, appropriate candidates are non-presbyopes with myopia or hyperopia and no clinically significant astigmatism, according to Osei. As with any contact lens, patients should have no condition that interferes with lens wear, including dry eye disease or corneal abnormalities. The lenses also require the the discipline to care for the lenses and enough manual dexterity to properly handle them.
