
Announcing the recipients of the 2025 Visionary in Eye Care Resident Recognition Awards
Three residents were honored in the categories of Best in Ophthalmology, Best in Optometry, and Best in Retina Care during a ceremony at EyeCon 2025.
The recipients of the 2025 Visionary in Eye Care Resident Recognition Awards were announced during a special ceremony at the Optometry Times and Ophthalmology Times EyeCon® 2025 conference, held September 26 and 27 at the Margaritaville Hollywood Beach Resort, in Hollywood, Florida.
The awards program recognizes residents for accomplishments in 3 categories: Best in Ophthalmology, Best in Optometry, and Best in Retina Care. Nominations were evaluated based on leadership, education and research, and patient care.
The 2025 awardees are:
- Best in Optometry: Mallory Wright, OD, UAB School of Optometry
- Best in Ophthalmology: Sanchay Gupta, MD, MBA, Baylor College of Medicine
- Best in Retina Care: Daniel Rodriguez, MD, PhD, Baylor College of Medicine
The Visionary in Eye Care Resident Recognition Awards were created to highlight the future leaders of ophthalmology and optometry. Residents are nominated by their program directors for outstanding achievements in clinical care, research, and leadership.
The mission of the program is to honor and celebrate the remarkable accomplishments and contributions of residents across the eye care field. Its vision is to cultivate vibrant communities that unite program directors and emerging leaders, fostering collaboration and shaping the future of ophthalmology, optometry, and retina care.
Eligibility for the awards is open to residents who actively participated in an ophthalmology or optometry residency program in the United States between July 1, 2024, and June 30, 2025.
