FDA recalls eye drop that relieves ocular itch for potential contamination

The Class II recall alerts consumers and physicians to possible temporary or reversible health effects, but serious harm is unlikely.

An eye drop marketed as Clear Eyes Maximum Itchy Eye Relief (NDC: 67172-999-01 UPC 6 78112 65920 3) was recalled initially by the FDA on July 29, 2026, because of “lack of assurance of sterility.”

The wording is important here. The product is not considered actively contaminated; however, the manufacturer cannot state that the drops do not contain bacteria or fungi. As of now, no adverse events have been reported.

According to the FDA recall notice, lot number 2552A (about 39,060 bottles), which has an expiration date of 09/30/2027, is the affected product.

“The recall is due to potential contamination,” according to the FDA. The administration updated the classification to a Class II recall on August 14, 2026. Class II is defined as temporary or reversible health effects possible, but serious harm is unlikely.

Clear Eyes Maximum Itchy Eye Relief is distributed by Medtech Products Inc. of Prestige Consumer Healthcare, Tarrytown, NY. The nationwide recall was voluntary and initiated by the company.

The product is marketed as an astringent lubricant/redness reliever eye drop, according to the packaging, that is designed to relieve redness, itching, burning, and watery eyes. It is available for purchase at Walmart, Target, Kroger, Giant Eagle, and Meijer, Dollar General, and Family Dollar stores.

Consumers are advised to stop using the product and return it for a refund. They are encouraged to contact a pharmacist or physician with any concerns about the product’s effects. The FDA’s MedWatch program can be accessed to report adverse reactions here.
