The first patient has been dosed in Qlaris Bio’s phase 2 Nightingale clinical trial for QLS-111 in patients with normal-tension glaucoma (NTG).

 The study, which is Qlaris Bio’s third phase 2 clinical trial of the company’s lead investigational therapy, will be evaluating the safety, tolerability, and efficacy of QLS-111 in adult patients with NTG and will be conducted at multiple clinical sites across South Korea, according to a news release.

“NTG is highly prevalent in Asia and many of our patients struggle with ongoing vision loss despite intraocular pressures (IOP) that appear ‘normal’ by conventional standards,” said Ki Ho Park, MD, PhD, professor of ophthalmology at Seoul National University College of Medicine and lead investigator of the Nightingale study, in the release. “We are excited to evaluate QLS-111. A therapy that targets episcleral venous pressure (EVP) may offer a much-needed new strategy for pressure reduction and disease control in this population.”

QLS-111 is a first-in-class ATP-sensitive potassium channel modulator designed to lower IOP by reducing EVP. Qlaris Bio noted that this therapy is particularly relevant for patients with NTG whose IOPs remain within a healthy range but continue to experience disease progression.

With the Nightingale study taking place in South Korea, the trial will have access to a large NTG patient population due to the disease’s high prevalence in Asia, the release stated.

“The initiation of the Nightingale study is an exciting milestone in our mission to address unmet needs in glaucoma,” said Thurein Htoo, CEO of Qlaris Bio, in the release. “We believe that targeting EVP is a fundamentally new and important mechanism that can benefit many patients worldwide, especially as a complement to other therapies for patients requiring further IOP control without added [adverse] effects, such as hyperemia.”

The study will also work to build on positive clinical data that resulted from previous phase 2 Osprey and Apteryx clinical trials. Both trials “demonstrated promising safety and efficacy of QLS-111 in patients with ocular hypertension and open-angle glaucoma, including when administered in combination with latanoprost,” the release stated.

Osprey and Apteryx trial data were released by Qlaris Bio in February, with the Osprey study demonstrating that the 0.015% concentration dosed once daily in the evening drove the greatest decrease in IOP, as seen in the mean reductions of 3.7 mm Hg from mean diurnal baseline IOP of 23.0 mm Hg. The Apteryx trial found that QLS-111 0.015% dosed with latanoprost demonstrated additive mean IOP reductions when compared with latanoprost monotherapy, and achieved a 3.2-mm Hg greater reduction for QLS-111 QPM dosing and 3.6-mm Hg greater reduction for QLS-111 twice daily dosing.

In recent news, Qlaris Bio announced in June that a QLS-111 and latanoprost fixed-dose combination (QLS-111-FDC) is in development for the treatment of primary open-angle glaucoma, ocular hypertension, and NTG in patients whose optimal IOP control may remain “unachievable” due to needing an EVP reduction. The novel preservative-free therapy demonstrated a more than 33 mm Hg of additional IOP reduction compared with latanoprost monotherapy alone, according to the phase 2 clinical study data. Additionally, no incremental hyperemia was observed when QLS-111 0.015% was added to latanoprost.

For Sheila Setork, OD, the comfort of the patient comes first when considering 1-day contact lenses. That is why the modern design of daily disposables plays a fundamental role in her pitch to patients to try out contact lenses, especially for those with active lifestyles or excessive screen time.

“I usually do like to explain that these lenses are designed now for patients to feel more comfortable. They’re also more breathable,” Setork, who practices in the Chicago area of Illinois, said. “Then I really just try to take into account what their main complaint is, and a lot of times it’s dryness, it’s allergies. We know a lot of these issues can be alleviated with the daily disposables.”

Setork said that factors to consider for patients with contact lenses include vision, comfort, and the physiological response of the eye to the lens. She added that dailies’ ability to help with comfort can make a difference in retention rate, as lack of comfort is the No. 1 reason patients discontinue contact lens use.

Additionally, Setork said that in her 14 years of practicing, she has seen a younger demographic show an interest in contact lenses, particularly to wear while playing sports. She stated that daily disposables provide an inviting option for these younger patients, as their parents are often open to them as a first-time option for contact lenses. With students spending an average of 44% of their waking hours looking at screens, daily disposables are also a good option to combat the ocular effects of excessive screen time.

Getting patients on board can be as simple as talking the benefits and ease of wearing dailies. Additionally, Setork said that regularly checking in with patients wearing 2-week and monthly lenses can lead to opportunities to switch to dailies.

“I would say most patients are an ideal candidate, but a lot of times if they have any issues with their 2-week or monthly [lenses],” Setork said. Having previously worked at an ophthalmology practice, she recalled the extensive treatment and meibomian gland analysis that patients with dry eye would receive. “It was always part of it, to have a patient come over to contact lenses, switch to the dailies, and then go back and continue their therapy and their treatment process over the dry eye clinic, because we still want to get to the heart of that. It’s just such a straightforward way to get rid of so many of those issues, and sometimes it’s all the patient needs.”

As a CooperVision Advisory Board member, Setork said that the company’s comprehensive selection of dailies also provides ease in recommending lenses to patients, offering toric daily and multifocal daily options. FDA-approved myopia control lenses are also offered as a daily disposable option for ideal candidates.

Globally, daily disposables have remained a successful option for patients. All markets in 20 countries evaluated between 2000 and 2023 saw daily disposable lens fitting increase in similar amounts, according to a 2024 study.

 “The overall success of daily disposable lenses is likely due to multiple factors,” the study authors, led by Philip B. Morgan, PhD, BSc(Hons), MCOptom, FAAO, FBCLA, of the University of Manchester, stated. “Daily disposable lens wear obviates care solution-related problems and significantly reduces the risk of developing corneal infiltrative events. Fewer ocular complications in general have been reported with daily disposable lenses compared with reusable lenses. Practitioners can maintain an inventory of daily disposable lenses, which facilitates timely and accurate lens fitting as well as the immediate dispensing of lenses for short-term wearing trials, prior to offering an ongoing lens supply. Streamlined payment systems can be set up, with lens supply matching the recommended frequency of aftercare visits.”

The important role daily disposables play in your practice

PainReform announced it has acquired a majority equity interest in LayerBio, focusing on LayerBio's OcuRing-K technology, for which it plans to initiate the next clinical trial.

The OcuRing technology is a bioerodible sustained-release implant applied to the haptic of an intraocular lens (IOL) for use in cataract surgery. Once implanted inside the eye, the OcuRing continuously releases medications for treatment and prevention of postoperative complications of cataract surgery, with OcuRing-K designed to deliver ketorolac, an anti-inflammatory and analgesic drug, intra-surgically during cataract procedures.

The OcuRing is designed to offer a "dropless" alternative that circumvents the challenges associated with traditional eye drop regimens, which can be associated with several drawbacks, such as poor adherence, particularly among older patients, inconsistent and inefficient drug delivery, and risks associated with steroids, including elevated intraocular pressure and potential for infection.

Ehud Geller, executive chairman and interim CEO of PainReform, commented on the transaction in a press release, saying, “This transaction has the potential to position PainReform at the forefront of nonopiate innovation in one of the most common and impactful surgical procedures worldwide. The company noted that the current CEO of LayerBio, Ken Mandell, MD, PhD, will continue in his role guiding its operations and product development efforts.

In addition to NSAIDs, the OcuRing platform has the capacity to deliver other ophthalmic medications, including corticosteroids, antibiotics, and glaucoma medications. Other than cataract surgery, the companies will explore broader ophthalmic uses for the OcuRing, including glaucoma, corneal transplants, and anti-infective applications.

As for PainReform, the company works "to incorporate generic drugs which have been proven safe and effective with our proprietary extended drug-delivery system in order to create a significant improvement in therapy via extended-release drug products and to take advantage of the 505(b)(2) regulatory pathway created by the US Food and Drug Administration." Its proprietary extended-release drug-delivery system provides an extended period of postsurgical pain relief without repeated dose administration, which also reduces the need for opiates post surgery. The company's PRF formulation is oil-based, viscous, and water-free, and is currently being used in a phase 2 trial for postsurgical pain and in preclinical trials for nerve block to treat neuropathic pain and the delivery of local anesthesia (with reduced viscosity), osteomyelitis, and sustained release cancer chemotherapeutics.

Although nearly every eye care conference can promise new data, fresh takes on clinical problems, and high-quality education, the annual Congress of the American Optometric Association and World Council of Optometry are the only associations to claim the titles of 

. As leaders in the optometric industry convened in Minneapolis, Minnesota, from June 25 to 28, 2025, conversation flowed, business moves were discussed, and nearly everyone visited the same hotel lobby for a drink or two. Between sessions, the 

team caught up with some key opinion leaders, and here are some of the highlights from the meeting.

First-ever Innovation Hub highlights strides made in technology, AI in eye care

In its debut year, the AOA Innovation Hub encouraged conversation between clinicians, tech titans, start-ups, and industry reps about the road ahead for technology and artificial intelligence (AI) in eye care. Moderated by Scot Morris, OD, the Innovation Hub was split into 3 panel discussions on assessing future health through AI-enabled tools, addressing patient workflow challenges through AI, and enhancing treatment through new technologies.

"This isn't just another summit—it's a call to action to challenge your perspectives, engage with these industry titans and be at the forefront of the evolution of eye care," Morris said.

Nora Lee Cothran, OD, FAAO, moderated the final session on enhancing treatment through new technologies. When speaking to 

she said, “The Innovation Hub represents more than just technological advancement; it symbolizes the profession's progressive spirit.”

Myopia management and AI continue to dominate conversations

When in and around optometrists, the topic of myopia is bound to come up. Optometry’s Meeting delivered quite a few thought-provoking educational courses on the topic. Ashley Wallace Tucker, OD, FAAO, FSLS, Dipl ABO, delivered an eye-opening joint lecture on dry eye disease and myopia management in pediatric patients, alongside former student and fellow optometrist Kaleb Abbott, OD, MS, FAAO. In a profession where dry eye is largely viewed through an adult lens, Tucker encourages optometrists to turn more attention toward younger patients, particularly those undergoing myopia treatment.

Langis Michaud, OD, MSc, FAAO, FSLS, FBCLA, FEAOO, a professor at the Université de Montréal School of Optometry, delivered a passionate discourse on the critical importance of comprehensive teamwork in myopia management. He emphasized that managing myopia is not solely the optometrist's responsibility, but a collective effort involving every staff member, starting with the front office personnel. The key message is that myopia should be treated as a genuine disease, not merely a refractive error, as recognized by the National Academy of Sciences. Michaud stressed that controlling myopia is about protecting children's future vision and quality of life, potentially preventing significant pathological complications that could lead to blindness.

Carolyn Majcher, OD, FAAO, presented a collaborative discussion with her colleague Mary Beth Yackey, OD, about retinal complications associated with high myopia. Their presentation focused on the importance of understanding and managing potential vision-threatening conditions in patients with significant myopic refractive errors. The presentation comprehensively explored several key retinal complications commonly observed in patients with high myopia, such as retinal tears, rhegmatogenous retinal detachment, foveal schisis (myopic traction maculopathy), and myopic choroidal neovascularization. Despite neither presenter personally practicing myopia management, they strongly emphasized its potential to prevent serious retinal and glaucomatous complications.

Novelty in contact lenses made a big splash

Johnson & Johnson's new lens, Acuvue Oasys MAX 1-day multifocal toric, addresses a significant challenge in eye care: patients with aging eyes who previously had limited contact lens options. Traditionally, as patients developed astigmatism and presbyopia, they were often told they could no longer wear contact lenses, leading to lens dropout and patient dissatisfaction. These innovations mark significant progress in daily disposable contact lens technology, offering patients more comprehensive vision solutions in a healthier, more comfortable platform.

Karen R. Hoffman, OD, presented 3 cases in which patients with complex corneas were fitted with customized scleral lenses (Zenlens; Bausch + Lomb); in the end, each patient achieved 20/20 vision, was happy with their vision, and was able to wear the lenses comfortably for extended periods. Hoffman's poster, which is titled "Utilization of customizable toric peripheral curves to optimize scleral lens fit and vision outcomes in patients with irregular astigmatism and corneal complexities," showcased the clinical work of herself; Cian Gildea, BscOptom; and Boris Severinsky, OD, FAAO, FBCLA, FSLS.

Additionally, Doerte Luensmann, PhD, Dipl Ing (AO) FAAO, senior clinical scientist at the Centre for Ocular Research & Education (CORE) at the University of Waterloo, presented a poster that earned distinction as one of the top 5 of the year. The poster, entitled "Coverage of ametropia with a planned replacement soft contact lens portfolio," was presented by Luensmann; Jill Woods, MSc, MCOptom, FAAO, FBCLA; and Lyndon Jones, BSc, PhD, DSc, FCAHS, FCOptom, DipCLP, DipOrth, FAAO, FIACLE, FBCLA. The research focused on the prescription coverage capabilities of the Bausch + Lomb ULTRA contact lens portfolio and its ability to meet the needs of a broad patient population.

Holistic wellness as eye care – and how to intervene in dangerous situations

Jessilin Quint, OD, MBA, FAAO, co-owner of Smart Eye Care in Maine, delivered a compelling lecture on the intersection of wellness, nutrition, and ocular health. Her talk explored the emerging trends in preventive eye care and the critical role of nutritional supplements in maintaining optimal eye health. Quint addressed the growing patient interest in supplements, highlighting the importance of understanding the beneficial and potentially harmful effects of various nutritional compounds on eye health.

Cothran delivered a presentation titled "Hello Darkness, My Old Friend: A Mental Health Primer for the Optometric Physician." Her primary objective was to educate optometrists about mental health, focusing on depression, anxiety, suicide, and intervention strategies.

Finally, Kristin Adams, OD, and social worker Colleen Onstad, MSW, LICSW, highlighted at Optometry’s Meeting 2025 how optometrists are uniquely positioned to spot signs of domestic violence, particularly through ocular and head injuries like TBIs, repeated facial trauma, and inconsistent histories. They emphasized the need for private, empathetic conversations, patient consent, and close collaboration with social services to make timely referrals, which was illustrated by a case where optometry intervention led to a survivor’s recovery. With only a small fraction of survivors seeking medical care, optometrists can play a crucial role in identifying abuse and helping break the cycle through proactive, integrated care.

Takeaways from the 2025 American Optometric Association Optometry's Meeting

SightGlass Vision’s Diffusion Optics Technology (DOT) spectacle lenses have now been worn by 1 million children.

 First made available in 2021, the lenses have experienced significant momentum and have reached a major milestone that reflects the need for myopia control solutions, SightGlass Vision said in a news release.

“Reaching 1 million children is a powerful testament to what our clinical studies have already shown—DOT

lenses work, eye care professionals trust them, and children want to wear them,” said Andrew Sedgwick, CEO of SightGlass Vision, in the release. “It’s encouraging to see eye care professionals increasingly embrace this innovation for their young patients, marking another meaningful step towards combating the global myopia epidemic. We remain committed to bringing DOT lenses to children in more parts of the world.”

The DOT lens has been launched across Asia-Pacific, Europe, and North America, with an estimated 500,000 fitted with DOT lenses in 2025 alone, as estimated by global sales data. Additionally, SightGlass Vision’s patent-protected technology has made its commercial debut in several markets around the globe, including China, the Netherlands, Israel, Canada, and Spain. The lens is also involved in preliminary market trials in other countries.

Earlier this year, SightGlass Vision released preliminary results from a clinical study that found that DOT 0.2 spectacle lenses were highly effective for myopia management, achieving 75% efficacy in children after 12 months in China. Additionally, 93% of children expressed positive feedback about their DOT lens glasses.

 Previous findings have demonstrated that the DOT lenses significantly reduce myopia progression over 36 months in children as young as 6 years, with 65% of children having no clinically meaningful myopia progression after 1 year. Additionally, myopia progression was reduced by 59% over 2 years when the lenses were worn full-time.

With the lens not yet commercially available in the US, Debbie Laughton, BSc, PhD, previously told 

that the North American CYPRESS clinical trial should provide eye care providers with hope that these lenses will one day positively impact vision for children in the US. “Eye care providers can feel confident that DOT lenses effectively slow myopia progression in children from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds, demonstrating consistent results across both Asian and North American populations,” she said.

DOT lenses for slowing myopia progression worn by a total of 1 million children

ABB Optical Lab Services and ABB Contact Lens Specialty Vision Products are now part of an expansion of Professional Eye Care Associates of America (PECAA) and ABB Optical Group’s strategic vendor partnership.

 Now, PECAA Max members will have access to ABB’s independent lab network and comprehensive portfolio of premium and proprietary lenses, according to a news release.

“ABB is uniquely positioned to serve private practices with the independence that ensures solutions are aligned with the best interests of eye care professionals," said President of ABB Optical Group James Gilchrist. The expansion of ABB’s existing soft contact lens and business solution offerings that are available to PECAA Max members supports both companies’ commitment to supporting the success of independent eye care providers, the release stated. Additionally, ABB provides a complete specialty vision product portfolio and an expert consultant team for specialty contact lens fitters, including access to ABB’s DELTA Scleral lens.

 Additionally, 9 out of 10 customers who use ABB for eyeglass lenses reported that they would stay with the lab through the following 12 months.

PECAA offers several different member options, including PECAA Max, PECAA Launch, and PECAA Propel. PECAA Max provides vendor savings and rebates (including over 200 vendor partners and IncentiveEYES and VSP Vision Exam rebates) expert business advisers, CE courses, staff training, and peer-to-peer networking, among other benefits. PECAA Launch is a membership that supports doctors opening new practices, providing guidance from concept to grand opening. Business advisers in finance and strategy, operations, optical management, marketing, and billing and coding are available through the membership. For the first 12 months, membership is free, with reduced fees kicking in for the second year and a standard fee after 2 years.
