AAOpt 2025: Advances in regenerative medicine for the ocular surface
Cecelia Koetting, OD, FAAO, DipABO, emphasized that the field of regenerative medicine is continuously expanding, with new devices and approaches constantly emerging.
Cecilia Koetting, OD, FAAO, DipABO, of the University of Colorado School of Medicine, delivered a lecture on regenerative medicine that explored innovative approaches to treating ocular surface disease and dry eye during the American Academy of Optometry's Academy 2025 meeting in Boston, Massachusetts. Her presentation highlighted the rapidly evolving landscape of medical treatments and technologies. The lecture delved into various biologics and treatment modalities, including autologous serum, amniotic membranes, oxervate, and emerging technologies like photobiomodulation and low-light level therapy.
Koetting emphasized that the field of regenerative medicine is continuously expanding, with new devices and approaches constantly emerging. A key focus was the holistic approach to understanding ocular surface conditions. Koetting noted that practitioners are now looking at the face more comprehensively, identifying potential causes of dry eye that were previously overlooked. Devices like Tixel and OptiLIFT represent this new, more integrated approach to patient care. Recognizing the overwhelming nature of these rapid advancements, Koetting offered practical advice for healthcare professionals. She strongly recommended attending conferences and exploring exhibit halls as critical methods for staying current. She encouraged colleagues to:
- Engage with representatives from smaller companies
- Network with industry experts
- Follow leading researchers in the field
Koetting specifically highlighted influential researchers pushing the boundaries of regenerative medicine, mentioning colleagues like Selena MG and Laura Pyramid as key thought leaders driving innovation. The lecture underscored the importance of continuous learning and professional development in medical fields, particularly in regenerative medicine. By staying informed about emerging technologies, networking with peers, and maintaining an open mind to new treatment approaches, healthcare professionals can provide more comprehensive and cutting-edge care to their patients.
