AAOpt 2025: The lost art of corneal GP fitting for regular corneas

Susan Gromacki, OD, MS, FAAO, FSLS, stated that gas permeable (GP) lens fitting has fallen to the wayside in optometric education.

Susan Gromacki, OD, MS, FAAO, FSLS gave a presentation titled "The Lost Art of Corneal GP Fitting for Regular Corneas" at the American Academy of Optometry (AAOpt) Academy meeting, co-presented with Dan Fuller, OD, FAAO Dipl, FSLS. The presentation was designed to address a critical gap in contemporary optometric education: the declining focus on corneal gas permeable (GP) contact lens fitting. Additionally, the presentation highlighted the importance of reviving skills in GP lens fitting, recognizing that modern optometry curricula have shifted attention towards newer specialty lenses like scleral lenses.

Gromacki emphasized that despite perceived challenges, GP lenses remain a valuable option for patient vision correction. Key benefits of GP lenses discussed include enhanced vision quality, particularly for patients with astigmatism, increased oxygen transmission to the cornea, and simplified care and handling. The course utilized an interactive Academy ACE format, encouraging participant engagement through questions, feedback, and active learning.

Gromacki addressed common misconceptions about GP lenses, particularly regarding initial lens awareness. She noted significant improvements in lens materials and coatings have dramatically increased comfort levels. While some practitioners perceive GP lens optics as more complex, she stressed that the fundamental principles remain consistent with those taught in optometry school.

The presentation was designed to provide practical insights, offering fitting pearls and clinical examples drawn from years of professional experience. By sharing these practical strategies, Gromacki aimed to help colleagues gain confidence in GP lens fitting and prescription. An important message was that GP lenses can substantially boost an optometric practice. They represent a versatile and effective vision correction method, especially for patients seeking long-term contact lens wear.

The course encouraged practitioners to reconsider GP lenses as a valuable treatment option that might have been overlooked in recent years. The interactive nature of the presentation, complete with prizes and engaging discussion, underscored the goal of reigniting interest in this traditional yet highly effective contact lens modality. Gromacki's approach sought to bridge educational gaps and reinvigorate practitioners' skills in corneal GP lens fitting.
