Is the gap in pediatric myopia management closing?

In an exclusive interview with Optometry Times, Monica Jong, BOptom, PhD, FAAO, FBCLA, identified parent and pediatrician awareness as the largest barrier in myopia management today. With several new developments in the field, clinicians may not be aware of the range of options available for treatment. A 2026 study examining pediatric myopia internet searches found that interest on the topic “skyrocketed” since Stellest’s FDA authorization, according to Jong.¹ “The FDA themselves saying that this is the lowest risk, most non-invasive solution…has actually given providers a lot more confidence,” she noted.

In Jong’s words, the AMAs decision to classify myopia as a chronic progressive disease is “not coincidental”. “When you have a full portfolio of solutions, it is now opening the category and really driving myopia management being the standard of care,” she stated. Jong expects that providers who begin implementing Stellest lenses into their practice will be able to adjust their workflow and staff training to detect myopia early. She emphasized that preventative treatment is key to myopia management, and that providers should educate patients and parents on the options available.

Jong’s key message to eye care providers is to keep up with the latest research and medical advancements in the field of myopia. “It's about changing our mindset, because now we have the ability to detect myopia early, we can even work towards preventative eye care, and this is what it takes to really change the trajectory of eye health for any child,” she continued.
