ODs look to lid scrubs first for blepharitis treatment

In a poll fielded on the Optometry Times website, we asked ODs what they used for first-line therapy for blepharitis patients.

A total of 382 responses were tallied. The multiple-choice poll answers included:

• Baby shampoo

• Commercial lid scrubs

• Microblepharoexfoliation

• Oral antibiotics

• Topical antibiotics

• Warm compresses

The majority of respondents look to commercial lid scrubs to address blepharitis with 43 percent choosing them first.

Warm compresses were second choice, but the choice was not close. Only 27 percent of respondents apply heat first.

After another sharp drop, baby shampoo comes in third with 16 percent of respondents reaching for it first.

Topical antibiotics are in fourth place.

In a close finish, microblepharoexfoliation and oral antibiotics close out the results.
