A recent market analysis and forecast evaluating the global and regional landscape of the myopic macular degeneration market over the next decade predicts that the market will experience steady growth driven by advancements in treatment technologies, growing awareness of the condition, and efforts to enhance patient outcomes.

 The report, “Myopic Macular Degeneration Market – A Global and Regional Analysis: Focus on Regional Country Analysis: Focus on Regional and Country Analysis – Analysis and Forecast, 2025-2035,” was released in May 2025 and is now available for purchase through ResearchAndMarkets.com, according to a news release.

The market assessed in the report includes diagnostic tools, therapeutic innovations such as anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) therapies, and supportive technologies to manage vision loss.

“The continued focus on early diagnosis, treatment, and managing complications from myopic macular degeneration is crucial in addressing the increasing number of individuals affected by this condition,” the report stated. “Increased awareness, improved health care infrastructure, and enhanced accessibility to treatment options are fueling the growth of this market.”

The report attributed the estimated growth in the market to the rising global incidence of myopia. Research currently indicates that high myopia is the fastest-growing type of myopia and could increase to over 1 billion cases globally by 2050. This then correlates to the rise of myopic macular degeneration cases, according to the report.

However, anti-VEGF therapies hold significant power in impacting the treatment landscape for myopic macular degeneration, thus fueling the market’s growth. As more anti-VEGF treatments are approved and combination therapies are utilized, the report suggests that treatments will become more accessible and improve patient outcomes. The anti-VEGF therapies work by preventing the growth of abnormal blood vessels in the retina, which is one of the key causes of myopic macular degeneration.

Challenges projected to impact the myopic macular degeneration market include the high cost of treatments, particularly for patients in developing countries or underserved regions.

 “The high costs of both medication and surgeries related to myopic macular degeneration treatment can limit patient access, which in turn hampers the growth of the market. Health care systems are often challenged to allocate funds for myopic macular degeneration treatments, given the competitive pressures from other conditions that also demand funding,” the report stated.

Companies including Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, F. Hoffmann-La Roche, and Bayer AG were cited in the report as “leading players in the global myopic macular degeneration market” in their investments into research and development in order to develop solutions that cater to market growth. The report also cites the increasing need for specialized care that can aid in the development of new treatment technologies.

“As the myopic macular degeneration market continues to evolve, emerging trends such as the development of more targeted and personalized therapies, the increasing use of digital health technologies for early detection and monitoring, and the growing focus on prevention and patient education are expected to shape its future landscape,” the report stated. “The rising prevalence of myopic macular degeneration, especially in aging populations and regions with high myopia rates, will fuel demand for more accessible, effective, and affordable treatment options. Last year, DelveInsight’s report titled “Myopic Macular Degeneration Market Insights, Epidemiology, and Market Forecast – 2034” also studied the myopic macular degeneration landscape across the US, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the UK, and Japan. The analysis anticipated the market growing from about 734 million USD in 2022 to almost 837 million USD by 2034, mostly fueled by anti-VEGF therapies and standard of care. The company found that Japan currently accounts for the highest prevalence of diagnosed myopic macular degeneration cases, with 49% of total cases in the 7 MM in 2022. The US contributes about 27% of diagnosed cases.

The report cited YESAFILI, OPUVIZ, AHZANTIVE, ENZEEVU, and PAVBLU as key biosimilar players that have the potential to contribute to improved affordability and accessibility of anti-VEGF therapy. Particularly, ENCELTO’s approval by the FDA in March 2025 also “opens the door for potential future gene therapies targeting macular degeneration in myopic patients,” according to the report.

Myopic macular degeneration market analysis estimates significant growth in the next decade 

A recent exploratory analysis has identified key predictive factors of improved best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA). The study found these factors a year and a half after patients with Leber hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) (caused by mt-ND4) received GenSight Biologics’ investigational gene therapy lenadogene nolparvovec (Lumevoq), which was administered at least 6 months after disease onset.

Better BCVA values and baseline thicker ganglion cell layer (GCL) and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) at optical coherence tomography (OCT) measurements were found to be the key factors. The analysis was published in 

Investigational Ophthalmology and Visual Science.

“By linking structure and function, [this exploratory study] improves our understanding of the factors influencing vision recovery after lenadogene nolparvovec administration in patients with MT

ND4 LHON, showing that better baseline BCVA values and thicker baseline OCT retinal layers in the dynamic phase of the disease, particularly the outer segments of macular GCL, are the key predictive factors associated with better BCVA 1.5 years after treatment in patients who received gene therapy at least 6 months after disease onset,” stated study authors, led by Robert C. Sergott, MD, from the Departments of Ophthalmology and Neurology at Wills Eye Hospital and Thomas Jefferson University, as well as the head of the Central Reading Center at William H. Annesley, Jr, EyeBrain Center.

 “This relationship between preservation of retinal structures and response to treatment strongly supports an effect of lenadogene nolparvovec on [retinal ganglion cell, or] RGC survival and function. These findings should facilitate optimization of patient selection for future clinical trials.”

Researchers conducted univariate analyses on 113 eyes of patients in GenSight’s 3 phase 3 studies – RESCUE, REVERSE, and REFLECT – with BCVA and 1.5 years post treatment as the dependent variable.

 Age, gender, timing of treatment, baseline BCVA value, and baseline OCT parameters were noted as covariates. BCVA was assessed by using the Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) chart at 1 or 4 meters.

 Findings from the analysis indicated that “patients treated during the dynamic phase of the disease achieve better visual outcomes than patients treated during the subacute phase of the disease,” according to a GenSight news release.

Given these results, study authors hypothesize that RNFL swelling during the subacute phase may hamper the diffusion of the viral vector to RGCs. However, during the dynamic phase, study authors state that stabilized retinal layers are instead preserved, allowing for successful transfection efficiency of RGCs – and the effects of gene therapy as a result.

“Our results support the existence of a relationship between better GCL and RNFL preservation at baseline and final visual outcome in MT

 patients treated with gene therapy at least 6 months after disease onset, unequivocally linking structure with function,” the authors stated.

“The study is the first to use spectral domain-optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) and other clinical outcomes to identify predictive factors of BCVA changes 1.5 years after treatment,” said Sergott in the release.

 “The structural and functional evidence concurs that direct injection of lenadogene nolparvovec may be more effective than the contralateral therapeutic effect, thus supporting a recommendation to treat LHON patients bilaterally when possible.”

Study authors noted that limitations of the study include its exploratory nature, in addition to the absence of a pure sham/placebo control group. The inclusion of this group could provide insights on predicative factors of outcome of the spontaneous evolution of MT-ND4 LHON disease. Findings were also limited to the administering of gene therapy during the subacute and dynamic phases of the disease.

Exploratory analysis discovers key predictive factors of improved BCVA in treatment of LHON disease with lenadogene nolparvovec

Alcon has entered into a definitive merger agreement with STAAR Surgical Company, through which Alcon intends to acquire STAAR. This is Alcon’s latest move in a string of acquisitions in 2025.

The planned acquisition of STAAR includes the EVO family of lenses (EVO ICL) for vision correction for patients with moderate to high myopia with or without astigmatism. EVO ICLs are implantable lenses that address a wide range of vision correction needs through a minimally invasive procedure that is reversible. EVO family ICLs are implanted between the iris and the natural crystalline lens during a procedure that does not remove corneal tissue.

Under the terms of the agreement, Alcon will purchase all outstanding shares of STAAR common stock for $28 per share in cash. These outstanding shares represent approximately a 59% premium to STAAR’s 90-day Volume Weighted Average Price (VWAP) and a 51% premium to the closing price of STAAR common stock on August 4, 2025. According to the company, this transaction represents a total equity value of approximately $1.5 billion.

David Endicott, CEO of Alcon, commented on the planned acquisition in a press release from the company, saying, “With the number of high myopes rising globally, the acquisition of STAAR enhances our ability to offer a leading surgical vision correction solution for those who are not ideal candidates for other refractive surgeries such as LASIK. This transaction will allow us to provide treatment options across the full spectrum of myopia—from contact lenses to surgical interventions—reinforcing our commitment to addressing the most significant needs in eye care.”

Stephen Farrell, CEO of STAAR, commented in a press release, saying, “We believe the transaction with Alcon represents the best path forward and provides the greatest value for STAAR shareholders.”

Farrell continued, saying, “As we’ve shared, fluctuating demand in China over the past 2 years has continued to create significant headwinds for STAAR as a standalone company. I'm proud of our team’s efforts to address recent challenges, but there is more work to do. According to Alcon, the transaction is not subject to a financing condition, and the company intends to finance the transaction through the issuance of short- and long-term credit facilities.

The transaction is anticipated to close in approximately 6 to 12 months, subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approval and approval by STAAR’s shareholders.

Alcon agrees to acquire STAAR Surgical

Topcon Healthcare, Inc announced it has acquired cloud-based retinal screening technology company Intelligent Retinal Imaging Systems (IRIS). In a press release, Topcon expressed its intention to integrate IRIS technologies into its Healthcare from the Eye initiative and further empower clinical decision-making using artificial intelligence (AI), especially for patients with diabetic retinopathy and other diabetic eye diseases.

Topcon’s Healthcare from the Eye program is designed to facilitate directional care coordination between primary care providers (PCPs) and eye care providers (ECPs). The IRIS acquisition supports the company’s vision of a connected care model, allowing for early identification of patients at risk of ocular disease during PCP appointments. Following primary care visits, at-risk patients can be quickly referred to ECPs; using AI-analyzed ocular data, optometrists and ophthalmologists can screen for signs of systemic or neurological disease and, if necessary, refer patients back to primary care for further evaluation.

Topcon also said the IRIS integration will strengthen its cloud-based connected care platform, Harmony. Harmony is “designed to unify imaging, clinical insights, and AI analytics across care settings,” the company said. Following the acquisition, Harmony users will be able to access the IRIS platform's referral and communication capabilities. Topcon said the pairing will support infrastructure for robust shared clinical decision-making and improve patient adherence.

The IRIS platform is a camera-agnostic, cloud-based model for AI-assisted diabetic retinopathy screening. Founded in 2012, IRIS has enabled more than 1.8 million screenings and identified over 279,000 cases of diabetic retinopathy throughout more than 650 health care organizations, according to the press release. The IRIS mission is to improve quality scores and address gaps in the continuum of care. Its platform is used in routine clinical settings, Federally Qualified Health Centers, and larger health systems; seamless electronic medical record integration and broad camera compatibility maximize its scalability for providers in different environments.

Jacques Gilbert, chief strategy and business development officer at Topcon Healthcare, commented on the news. “This acquisition reflects our long-term strategy to connect the continuum of care through intelligent platforms that bring together data, workflow, and real-time decision support,” Gilbert said. “IRIS enables us to expand the reach of the Healthcare from the Eye initiative into primary care, strengthening coordination between PCPs and ECPs, and ensuring patients receive timely, targeted care.”

Topcon acquires Intelligent Retinal Imaging Systems, bolstering AI-powered screenings

Recent results from a phase 3 study assessing LUMIFY Preservative Free redness reliever eye drops (preservative-free brimonidine tartrate ophthalmic solution 0.025%, Bausch + Lomb) in comparison with LUMIFY redness reliever eye drops demonstrated that the preservative-free drops are statistically noninferior to LUMIFY in reducing ocular redness in adults. The results from the randomized, active-controlled, multicenter study were published in 

The study's primary objective was to demonstrate that LUMIFY Preservative Free is noninferior to LUMIFY in reducing ocular redness. The primary efficacy end point was an investigator-assessed ocular redness score 8 timepoints from 5 minutes to 240 minutes after drop administration on day 1. Finally, the secondary objective was the compare the safety of both drops.

“Since launching in 2018, LUMIFY has been the No. 1 doctor-recommended redness reliever brand, known for delivering noticeable results in 1 minute and lasting up to 8 hours,”

 said John Ferris, president of consumer at Bausch + Lomb, in a news release from the company. “This study demonstrates that our new LUMIFY Preservative Free eye drops reduce redness quickly and are just as safe and effective as the original LUMIFY, providing a needed option for patients with eye sensitivities.”

The study included 380 participants with ocular redness, who were given either LUMIFY Preservative Free or LUMIFY in a single drop 4 times daily for 4 weeks. Study results show that the primary objective was met, with day 1 analysis of all 11 time points (1 minute to 480 minutes post administration) supporting these findings. Additional secondary efficacy end point data from 1 minute, 360 minutes, and 480 minutes post administration demonstrated that the LUMIFY Preservative Free drops perform similarly to the LUMIFY drops.

“At visit 1, there was no significant difference between treatment groups in the number of participants achieving total clearance at any time of the 11 timepoints from 1 to 480 minutes post instillation, 2 participants from each treatment group had total clearance of ocular redness,” the study authors, led by Melissa Toyos, MD, partner at Toyos Clinic in Nashville, Tennessee, stated. “While not statistically significant, the percentage of patients with total clearance of ocular redness was numerically greater for the [LUMIFY Preservative Free, or] BTOS-PF 0.025% group than for the LUMIFY 0.025% group at the majority of timepoints from visit 1 to visit 3.”

The overall safety profile of the preservative-free drops was also favorable and comparable to LUMIFY, with a low incidence of adverse effects recorded when used as directed. These adverse effects could include rebound redness and loss of efficacy over time.

 Rates of ocular rebound redness were reported in 1.8% in the preservative-free group and 0.6% in the LUMIFY group. Adherence was reported to be high in the treatment groups, with preservative-free at 96.8% and LUMIFY at 97.9%.

“The results show that LUMIFY Preservative Free is a well-tolerated alternative option for consumers with ocular redness who have sensitivities to preservatives or are at increased risk of ocular surface disease,” said Toyos in the release.

For the preservative free and LUMIFY groups, the drops were defined by participants as “comfortable” by 50% and 51.1% of the group respectively, “refreshing” by 20.2% and 20% respectively, and “cool” by 14.4% and 11.6% respectively.

Study authors noted that limitations of the study included the absence of statistical inference possible for all secondary outcomes due to preplanned hierarchical analysis. “Although similar proportions of participants in the BTOS-PF 0.025% and LUMIFY 0.025% groups had dry eye at baseline, impact of baseline dry eye severity and lubricating drop use on redness response and/or tolerability assessments cannot be discounted,” the authors stated. They noted that investigating the short-term effects and longer-term outcomes, including additional assessment visits after discontinuing treatment beyond the 7-day mark, could be avenues for future studies.

Phase 3 study assessing LUMIFY Preservative Free and LUMIFY eye drops meets primary end point

In recent news from biopharmaceutical company Clearside Biomedical, Health Canada has granted approval of the company’s triamcinolone acetonide injectable suspension (Xipere) for suprachoroidal use in the treatment of uveitic macular edema (UME). Xipere has been approved for use in the US, Canada, Australia, and Singapore, and is under regulatory review in China, according to a news release.

Additionally, the company is exploring different strategic alternatives to advance its suprachoroidal space (SCS) platform and drug development pipeline in order to maximize stockholder value. Said strategic alternatives that are under consideration include the sale, license, monetization, and/or divestiture of 1 or more of Clearside Biomedical’s assets and technologies, collaboration, partnership, merger, acquisition, joint ventures, or other strategic transactions, according to a news release.

“No agreement providing for any strategic transaction has been reached and there can be no assurance that this process will result in any such transaction,” the company stated in the release.

 “Clearside has not set a timetable for the strategic review process. Clearside does not intend to provide updates until the board approves a specific action or otherwise determines that disclosure is appropriate or required.”

The SCS Microinjector platform is an in-office, repeatable, nonsurgical procedure for the targeted delivery of various therapies to the macula, retina, or choroid with the goal of preserving and improving vision in patients with sight-threatening eye diseases. Clearside Biomedical is currently partnering its SCS injection platform with companies that utilize other ophthalmic therapeutic agents, including gene therapies and antitumor agents.

The company’s internal pipeline includes its CLS-AX (axitinib injectable suspension) program and preclinical small molecule programs. CLS-AX is a proprietary suspension of axitinib for suprachoroidal injection and is being developed for the treatment of neovascular age-related macular degeneration (wet AMD). The injection has demonstrated “meaningful potential” in phase 1/2a and phase 2b wet AMD clinical trials, with data supporting the potential efficacy, safety, and versatility of CLS-AX, according to Clearside Biomedical. The company also stated that it is aligned with the FDA on the essential components of a phase 3 program.

For small molecule programs, Clearside Biomedical is evaluating preclinical data on 2 approaches targeting geographic atrophy and preclinical data on the combination of a steroid plus a TKI for the treatment of diabetic macular edema.

“We strongly believe that our proprietary suprachoroidal delivery platform provides an effective and reliable way to target challenging retinal diseases that need longer-lasting treatments. Our SCS Microinjector

 enables a proven in-office, repeatable, nonsurgical procedure for the targeted delivery of a wide variety of therapies to the macula, retina, and choroid. Based on our retinal expertise and intellectual property, we delivered the first commercial product using our SCS platform, which is now approved and commercialized in the US, approved in Singapore and Australia, and is currently under regulatory review in China and Canada.

“We have successfully produced positive and highly competitive phase 2b clinical data for CLS-AX for the treatment of wet AMD. We are proud of the fact that the CLS-AX ODYSSEY Phase 2b trial is the only TKI clinical trial to date to achieve positive safety and efficacy results from multiple TKI dosing in wet AMD patients. Further, in February 2025, we conducted a successful end of phase 2 meeting with the FDA through which we gained alignment on a phase 3 development plan for CLS-AX in wet AMD. In addition, our clinical development collaboration partners continue to make progress in advancing their later-stage suprachoroidal clinical programs utilizing our SCS Microinjector in various ophthalmic disorders.
