Bausch + Lomb launches PreserVision AREDS3 eye vitamins in US
AMD affects approximately 28 million people in the US and is a leading cause of vision loss among older adults.
Bausch + Lomb announced the US launch of PreserVision AREDS3 eye vitamins, a new formulation that combines AREDS2 nutrients recommended by the National Eye Institute (NEI) with a proprietary B-vitamin complex intended to support macular health in a broader range of patients, including those in earlier stages of age-related macular degeneration (AMD).1
The company said in a news release the formulation builds on the AREDS2 nutrient profile used to help reduce the risk of progression from moderate-to-advanced AMD while incorporating additional B vitamins informed by research examining their potential role in AMD.1
“AMD affects millions of people, often long before symptoms meaningfully change day-to-day life,” said John Ferris, president, Consumer for Bausch + Lomb, in the release. “Historically, options to support macular health earlier in the condition have been limited. PreserVision AREDS3 reflects decades of research, and our commitment to advancing eye health through science, offering an option for a broader range of people looking to support their macular health.”*
According to the release, AMD affects approximately 28 million people in the US and is a leading cause of vision loss among older adults. The condition can impair central vision and affect activities such as driving, reading, and facial recognition.1
Bausch + Lomb said PreserVision AREDS3 is designed to provide “triple-action support” by combining AREDS2 nutrients with a B-vitamin complex containing thiamin (B1), riboflavin (B2), niacin (B3), pantothenic acid (B5), vitamin B6, biotin (B7), folate (B9), and vitamin B12. The company also said the formulation is designed to provide improved absorption of key nutrients.1
“Nutritional support for AMD management has to evolve as the science evolves,” said Julie Poteet, OD, MS, CNS, in the release. “PreserVision AREDS3 eye vitamins reflect the most current thinking in nutritional support for macular health, building on the established AREDS2 nutrients and incorporating a unique B-vitamin complex backed by more than two decades of scientific research on B vitamins.2 That matters in practice, because it gives me greater confidence and flexibility when discussing nutritional options with a broader group of patients, including those in earlier stages.”
The company said development of the product was informed by research summarized in a narrative review published in Ophthalmology and Therapy, which evaluated more than 20 human studies involving nearly 30,000 individuals. The review included findings from the Women’s Antioxidant and Folic Acid Cardiovascular Study, which reported an association between specific B-vitamin supplementation and reduced AMD risk.
Bausch + Lomb said it plans to pursue a future long-term clinical trial evaluating the formulation.
PreserVision AREDS3 eye vitamins are now available online and through national retailers including Amazon, Target, Walgreens, and Walmart.
