WCO, Alcon video series breaks down TFOS DEWS III Dry Eye Report

The World Council of Optometry (WCO) and Alcon have released a 3-video series designed to help eye care professionals understand and apply recommendations from the recently published Tear Film & Ocular Surface Society Dry Eye Workshop III (TFOS DEWS III) report, according to a news release.

The series features Professors Jennifer Craig, OD; Lyndon Jones, DSc, FCOptom, FAAO; and James Wolffsohn, BSc, MBA, PhD; all members of the TFOS DEWS III Steering Committee and contributors to the WCO-Alcon initiative. The videos provide an overview of the report, review the diagnostic methodology section, and highlight key points from the management and therapy report.

“It’s crucial that eye care professionals stay up to date on the latest research and findings, yet we recognize that the pace of life may get in the way of reading TFOS DEWS III in its entirety,” said Cindy Tromans, BSc (Hons), PhD, FEAOO, president of WCO, in the release. “This compact video series is an easily digestible, creating an important resource for clinicians and educators looking to continuously improve their practice using the most recent evidence.”

Dry eye disease is described as a chronic and painful condition affecting nearly 1.6 billion people worldwide. According to the release, increasing technology use, environmental triggers, and an aging population have contributed to rising prevalence.

“At Alcon, we are committed to advancing the understanding of Dry Eye Disease by supporting the eye care professionals who are often the first to recognize its signs and impact,” said Carla Mack, OD, MBA, FAAO, Dip(AAO), FBCLA, Global Head of Professional Education and Development at Alcon, in the release. “Through this TFOS DEWS III summary video series, we aim to translate the latest science and expert perspectives into accessible education material, helping empower ECPs to better understand, identify, measure and manage this condition in their practices.”

The video series follows the recent launch of the Dry Eye Management Map, an online interactive tool developed through the WCO-Alcon partnership to support optometrists in managing dry eye disease. The tool incorporates TFOS DEWS III guidance and generates evidence-based management approaches while maintaining the clinician’s role as the final decision-maker.

Eye care professionals also have free access to the WCO Alcon Dry Eye Wheel, which uses a three-step framework of mitigation, measurement, and management to support dry eye care.
